BOSTON — A dozen students in Lynn, all part of the nonprofit FUEL Education program that helps families save for college, have been accepted to competitive schools with enough scholarships, grants and savings to cover more than 80 percent of their collective college costs.

FUEL Education, which operates in Chelsea, Boston, Salem and Lynn, began with the La Vida scholars program in Lynn in 2009. The families of the 12 La Vida scholars in this year’s class collectively saved $39,600, matched by FUEL Education, and have earned a total of $540,990 in scholarships and grants to cover their collective $662,105 in college costs.

“We could not be prouder of what our students have achieved, and we know this is only the beginning of their success as they set out on their college careers,” said FUEL Education Founder and Executive Director Bob Hildreth.

“These families, with their dedication to saving for college and finding the best opportunities for their children, represent what FUEL truly believes — that a financial education paired with a family commitment is the key to opening the doors to higher education.”

The scholars, and their colleges, are Vanessa Cabrera, Providence; Marco Cuellar, Salem State; Denis Garcia, Stonehill; Amy Pineda, Providence; Yudith Sosa, Worcester Polytechnic Institute, Natasha Acosta, Bard College; Miriani German, Hamilton; Anna Martinez, Bernard; Crisbelly Medina, Clark; I.B. Polanco, Providence; Victoria Grandel, Union; Damarys Merida, Union.
