Yovana Marin!
Yovana Marin and her husband came from Colombia in hopes of living a more comfortable life and providing the best education to their children. She knew that attaining higher education was not an option but something that they had to achieve. However, she didn’t know what steps to take. It was through an Inversant flyer she received from KIPP Academy in Lynn that encouraged her to attend an informational meeting and quickly sign up in 2015.
Yovana works as a babysitter and her husband is a truck driver, together they are committed to helping their children go to college, something she describes as the best gift you can give your children. Their oldest son, Jairo, is now attending UMass Lowell but the steps they took to achieve that were much different then what they hope to do with their younger daughter Bridgeth. “We want to be prepared for when Bridgeth goes off to college. We want to start building a foundation so it’s a much easier process.”
She has found that the financial aid workshop has been the most helpful because she has learned about loans, scholarships, grants, among other things. “They educate us to first find other resources to help us pay for college costs before getting into debt and taking out loans.”
As a freshman at KIPP Academy in Lynn, Bridgeth is still exploring classes and future careers. However, she is interested in learning more about being a marine biologist and veterinarian. Yovana tells us that she “would tell the Hispanic community not to be afraid and to seek help when it comes to helping their kids obtain a better education. A little knowledge and money can go a long way.”
