Karen Pérez!
Karen Perez understands the importance of having a higher education and plans to help her daughter, Mercedes obtain that goal. Karen and Mercedes joined Inversant in the fall of 2015 and already feel like they have learned a lot. They first heard of the program through other families at our partner site, KIPP Academy Lynn.
Before Inversant, Karen had not taken any steps towards learning about the college process or saving for it. She says, “I hadn’t taken any steps at all because I didn’t know how or where to start. I went to college and obtained an associate’s degree, I had to pay my own way and that was very difficult to do.” Nonetheless, Karen tells us that the biggest help she has received from Inversant is the knowledge of what the college process will look like and the savings she has been able to do.
“Every topic has been very informative. I graduated a long time ago so everything has changed. I’m learning about new tests like the SATs that Mercedes will have to take and more about financial aid. I didn’t have to deal with that stuff so I don’t know these things. I’ve learned so much and feel like I’m the one going to college too!”
While Karen works as an Admissions Case Representative at the Lynn Housing Authority, Mercedes is studying hard as a freshman at KIPP Academy in Lynn. Although Mercedes has some time to think about what she wants to study, she is interested in learning more about culinary arts. Karen tells other families to “start the college process as early as possible because the college process comes by a lot quicker than you can imagine and college is so expensive, it’s best to be prepared.”
