Sarjo Trawalley!
Sarjo, a father of three children joined the Inversant program in 2014 for his two oldest, Mustapha and Bubacarr, after learning about it at Lynn KIPP Academy. His family came from Gambia, West Africa, looking to provide their children with the best education possible. However, being foreign and with no knowledge of how to navigate the system, Sarjo looked for opportunities like Inversant.
“When Mustapha was younger he told me he wanted to be a doctor. I told him that to be a doctor you need to go to college. So that’s when I thought to myself that I had to find a way to help my kids go to college to make their dreams come true.” After learning about Inversant at KIPP, Sarjo spoke to his family about how this would have to be a family effort because everyone would have to contribute to the program. This meant that while Sarjo attended monthly workshops and saved, the kids did their best in school.
Sarjo shares that all of the workshops have been so helpful that he goes home and shares the presentations with his family, this way they are all aware of what they need to be working on. “The facilitators teach everything you need to know from the start, it’s like reading a book with topics that are relevant to you that makes you want to keep reading.” However, Sarjo tells us that learning about financial aid such as loans and scholarships has been most helpful to him. He was unaware of how academics could really make a difference in obtaining scholarships.
Mustapha is now a freshman at Carleton College in Minnesota where he was awarded a $64,000 scholarship per year. He is still interested in becoming a doctor, majoring in psychology. Bubacarr is excelling in school and is interested in studying engineering or architecture. We wish Sarjo and his family the best of luck; you are on the right track!
